First Circular and Abstract Submission

The Center of African Studies of Nanjing University (CASNJU) was established in 1964. During the past half century, CASNJU has played an important role in African studies in China. The staff members of CASNJU have engaged in many fields of Africa Studies, including the human and physical geography of Africa, African agriculture, African rural development and natural resources assessments in Africa.

 

The aim of the CAARDSAC 2014 is to create a platform for better communications and scholarly exchange among managers and researchers in the field of African studies especially African agriculture, rural development and the Sino-Africa cooperation. It is the intention of the conference organisers to allow sufficient discussion and exchange of ideas during the anniversary, conference sessions as well as the post conference field trips. The conference will be run in a single session (including different sub-sessions)format with sufficient time for each paper presentation and follow-up discussion.

 

Conference Language: English or French

 

Themes include but not limited to (for participants of CAARDSAC 2014):

  1. The African physical environment and agriculture
  2. Impacts of climate changes on crops
  3. Rural development of Africa at different scales with some examples or case studies.
  4. African natural resources constraints and opportunities, especially fisheries, land use and urban planning.
  5. Models of African rural development: present and the future problems.
  6. China’s role as investor in African agriculture.
  7. Sino-Africa cooperation in agriculture and rural development
  8. Urbanization and its impacts on rural development in Africa
  9. African culture related to agriculture and rural development
  10. Other aspects related to African agriculture

 

Keynote and Invited Speakers

Abstract submission (please read carefully)

You are cordially invited to submit an abstract, and a motivation and abbreviated CV. A pre-selection process will follow and up to 15 candidates will be asked to submit a full extended abstract. 10 of these candidates will be selected to be fully sponsored to the CAARDSAC 2014 conference (including flights, accommodation, meals and internal travel in China. The remaining 5 of those who are not selected may still attend and present their paper, with accommodation and local transport paid for, but NOT including payment of flights to and from China.

The 1-page abstract (with 1-page motivation and 2-page CV) should be written in English and must be sent to the African conference organiser, Peter Johnston and General conference organiser Zhenke Zhang, by 12h00 CAT Friday June13. Abstracts must be original works of the author(s), and keeping in mind that extended abstracts must not be currently under review in the same form by another outlet and not submitted elsewhere prior to the notification date. The abstract will be reviewed by no less than two panel members.

More details of the extended abstract will be sent to successful applicants. The authors of accepted extended abstracts will be invited to present in the conference and included in the conference proceedings.

Publication

After the conference, a number of authors will be invited to submission a full article for a special issue of an international journal.

Registration:

No charge of registration fee for all selected participants. The organizer will also provide funds covering all flights, accommodation and related fees in China for the 10 selected African participants. A further 5 participants will have local accommodation and travel within China covered.
